More than 800,000 Indian-born people live in Australia today, making the Indian community one of the largest and fastest-growing migrant groups in the country. The number keeps growing because Australia and India share a mutual interest. Australia needs skilled workers, and India has a large population of educated professionals looking for stable, high-quality destinations.
But the path from India to Australian permanent residency is not a straight line. There are several routes, each suited to a different situation.
The Main Routes from India to Australia
There are four primary pathways that Indian nationals use to migrate to Australia:
- Study first, then skilled migration
- Direct skilled migration
- Employer sponsored migration
- Family reunification
Each has different timelines, costs, and requirements.
Pathway One: Study in Australia, Then Migrate
This is the most common route for Indian students in their 20s and early 30s. You come to Australia on a student visa, complete a CRICOS-registered course in an occupation on Australia's skilled occupation lists, and then use the 485 Temporary Graduate Visa to stay, work, and build your PR points score.
The student visa allows you to work up to 48 hours per fortnight during term time and full time during official breaks. After graduating, the 485 visa gives you 2 to 4 years of full-time work rights depending on your qualification level.
During those years on the 485, you accumulate Australian work experience which adds significant points to your skilled migration score. You can also sit a better English test if your first result was not at the superior level.
The full timeline from landing in Australia as a student to receiving permanent residency is typically 5 to 8 years when done properly. You are working, earning an Australian salary, building a life, and progressing toward PR the entire time.
The critical decision is course selection. Your course must lead to an occupation on Australia's skilled occupation lists. Nursing, engineering, IT, early childhood teaching, accounting, and trade courses all have strong PR pathways.
Student visa basics for Indian applicants:
You need a Confirmation of Enrolment from a CRICOS-registered institution. You need to demonstrate genuine student intent. The Genuine Student requirement looks at your study and migration motivations carefully. You need sufficient funds of at least AUD $29,710 per year for living costs plus tuition fees plus travel. You need IELTS 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5 for most bachelor-level courses.
The student visa fee from 1 July 2026 is AUD $2,500 for the main applicant. See the official fee schedule on the Department of Home Affairs website.

Pathway Two: Direct Skilled Migration
If you are an Indian professional with relevant qualifications and several years of work experience, you may be able to apply directly for a skilled migration visa without coming to Australia as a student first.
This pathway uses the 189, 190, or 491 framework. You need an occupation on Australia's skilled occupation lists, a positive skills assessment from the relevant Australian assessing authority, a points score high enough to receive an invitation from SkillSelect, and English language proficiency at the required level.
For Indian professionals, the skills assessment is a significant step. Each profession has a designated assessing authority. Engineers are assessed by Engineers Australia. IT professionals by the Australian Computer Society. Nurses by ANMAC. Accountants by CPA Australia or CAANZ.
The honest reality: to receive an invitation for the 189 visa independently, most applicants need scores of 80 to 90 points or above. For most Indian professionals who are 30 or older without Australian study or work experience, that score is difficult to reach. The 190 and 491 pathways, which add 5 and 15 points through state nomination, are more realistic starting points.
Approximate current invitation scores by occupation:
Health occupations in South Australia: 65 to 80 points with active nomination. Engineering: 75 to 85 in most states. ICT: 80 to 95 in competitive occupations, lower in regional state programs. Accounting: 80 to 95. Teaching: 65 to 80 in states with teacher shortages.

Pathway Three: Employer Sponsored Migration
If you have skills an Australian employer needs, they may be willing to sponsor your visa. This pathway does not require you to accumulate points. The employer's willingness to sponsor replaces the points-based selection.
The main visa is the Skills in Demand Visa Subclass 482. After working for a sponsoring employer for a period, you may be eligible to apply for permanent residency through the Employer Nomination Scheme Subclass 186. The 482 to 186 pathway is one of the most reliable routes to PR for skilled professionals with a willing employer.
For Indian professionals, the challenge is finding an employer willing to take on the sponsorship process. Many employers who would happily hire a skilled Indian professional hesitate because they do not understand how sponsorship works or assume it is more difficult than it is. This is where having a migration agent helps. We explain the process, handle the paperwork, and make it practical for an employer who might otherwise say no.
Pathway Four: Family Reunification
If you have a spouse, parent, or other close family member who is an Australian citizen or permanent resident, family visa pathways may be available.
The most common for Indian applicants is the Partner Visa. Subclass 309 and 100 for offshore applicants, or 820 and 801 for onshore applicants. If you are in a genuine relationship with an Australian citizen or permanent resident, you can apply to join them. Processing times for offshore partner visa applications currently run at approximately 24 to 36 months or longer.
Parent visas are available but come with significant waiting times. Some parent visa queues run to decades for the non-contributory category. The Contributory Parent Visa Subclass 143 is significantly faster but costs approximately AUD $47,000 for the primary applicant.
The English Requirement Is Not Negotiable
For almost every visa pathway to Australia, English proficiency is assessed.
For a student visa: IELTS 5.5 to 6.5 overall depending on the institution and course.
For the 485 visa: IELTS 6.5 overall with 5.5 in each band, test no more than 12 months old.
For skilled migration extra points: IELTS 7 for proficient English adds 10 points. IELTS 8 for superior English adds 20 points.
For Indian applicants, IELTS preparation time is often underestimated. Building from a functional English level to IELTS 8 in all four bands takes most people 6 to 18 months of focused preparation. Sit the test early. The points difference between a 6.5 and an 8 score is 20 points. That is often the margin between waiting for years and receiving an invitation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I migrate to Australia from India without a job offer? Yes. The 189 and 190 skilled migration visas do not require a job offer. The 491 state nomination also does not require one. Employer sponsorship through the 482 or 186 does require an employer.
What is the fastest way for an Indian professional to get PR in Australia? It depends on your occupation and points score. For high-scoring applicants in demand occupations, direct skilled migration can take 12 to 24 months from EOI to PR. For most applicants, the 485 post-study pathway or employer sponsorship pathway typically takes 5 to 8 years.
What IELTS score do I need to migrate to Australia from India? For the student visa: typically 5.5 to 6.5. For the 485: 6.5 overall with 5.5 in each band. For maximum PR points, IELTS 8 in all bands gives 20 points.
Do Indian qualifications count toward skilled migration? Yes, but they must be assessed by the relevant Australian assessing authority. The assessment determines whether your Indian qualifications meet Australian standards.
Can I bring my family to Australia on a student visa? Yes. Your spouse and dependent children can be included. Your spouse can work full time if you are studying a masters or doctoral degree, or 48 hours per fortnight for most other courses.
Is it better to study in Adelaide or Sydney for PR purposes? Both work. Adelaide offers the South Australia state nomination program, lower cost of living, and less competition for skilled roles. Sydney has more job opportunities in some sectors but higher costs and more competition for state nomination places.
How long does it take to get PR in Australia from India? Direct skilled migration with a competitive score: 12 to 36 months. Study then migrate: typically 5 to 8 years. Employer sponsorship via 482 to 186: typically 3 to 5 years.
