Indian students now represent the second-largest international student community in Australia. And most of them come with one goal beyond the degree itself: permanent residency.

That goal is achievable. But the path from course selection to PR is more strategic than most students or their families realise when they are making enrolment decisions.

This guide is for Indian students who are still choosing their course, and for those already studying who want to understand their options clearly.

    The Honest Starting Point

No course guarantees PR. The Department of Home Affairs has been very deliberate about this. The Genuine Student requirement exists precisely to stop people choosing courses purely as a migration strategy.

What a well-chosen course does is align your qualification with Australia's labour market needs, giving you access to skilled migration pathways that genuinely exist. The difference is not subtle. Graduates in the right occupations receive invitation scores in the 65 to 80 point range. Graduates in the wrong occupations, even with strong points, can wait years without receiving an invitation.

How the PR Points System Works

Australia's skilled migration system uses a points test. You need at least 65 points to lodge an Expression of Interest. But 65 points is just the entry ticket. Actual invitations in competitive occupation pools can require 85 to 90 points or more.

Your points come from age, English level, work experience, education, and state nomination. An Australian degree gives you 15 points. Superior English at IELTS 8 in all bands gives 20 points.

Critically, your occupation must appear on Australia's skilled occupation lists for any of this to matter. If your job is not on the list, you cannot apply for skilled migration regardless of your qualifications or points.

The Occupations That Are Actually Working in 2026

    Nursing and Healthcare

Registered Nurse is on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List. It has been in documented shortage in Australia for five consecutive years. State nomination rounds in South Australia and other states consistently prioritise health professionals. Invitation scores for nursing are often lower than other occupations because demand is so high.

A Master of Nursing Practice takes 1.5 to 2 years, qualifies you for the 485 visa, and puts you on the most reliable PR pathway available to international students right now. Starting salary for registered nurses is approximately AUD $65,000 to $85,000. AHPRA registration is required to practice. Confirm your degree program is AHPRA-accredited before enrolling.

    Engineering

Civil, mechanical, electrical, and mining engineering all appear consistently on Australia's skilled occupation lists. South Australia's April 2026 nomination round included 72 engineering invitations. Engineers Australia assesses qualifications and their standards are well understood for Indian graduates.

Starting salaries range from AUD $70,000 to $100,000. The points trajectory for engineers is strong. Australian work experience accumulated during the 485 visa years adds significantly to your score.

    Information Technology

Software engineers, cybersecurity specialists, data scientists, and ICT business analysts are on the skilled occupation lists. Australia's digital economy is growing and demand for tech professionals is genuine.

For Indian IT professionals, the competition is real. Many skilled applicants come with strong profiles and high points scores. Superior English scores and Australian work experience during the 485 period improve competitiveness significantly. Salaries range from AUD $80,000 to $120,000.

    Education: The Underutilised Pathway

Early childhood teaching and secondary school teaching are both on the MLTSSL and represent one of the most underutilised PR pathways for Indian students. Australia faces documented teacher shortages, particularly in maths, science, and regional areas.

For students who genuinely want to teach, this is one of the least competitive PR pathways available. Invitation scores tend to be lower than engineering or IT because fewer people choose this route. Starting salaries sit at AUD $80,000 to $95,000.

    Accounting and Finance

Accounting appears on the skilled occupation lists and remains a viable PR pathway, though the pool is more competitive than it was several years ago. If you genuinely want to work in accounting, the pathway is real. If accounting is purely a migration strategy, the competition you face may disappoint.

    Trades

Electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and commercial cooks all appear on skilled occupation lists. Trade qualifications from Australian institutions are assessed by Trades Recognition Australia. Starting salaries range from AUD $70,000 to $90,000. Trade courses represent a faster and often cheaper route to a PR-eligible qualification than university programs.

What to Do With This Information

Step one: identify which of these fields you could genuinely see yourself working in for several years. The Genuine Student requirement is not bureaucratic box-ticking.

Step two: confirm your target occupation appears on the MLTSSL, STSOL, or Core Skills Occupation List. The lists are published on the Home Affairs website and updated regularly. Do not rely on information from three years ago.

Step three: choose a CRICOS-registered course at a CRICOS-registered institution. Both the institution and the specific course must be CRICOS-listed. Confirm this before you enrol.

Step four: plan your English score early. The 485 visa requires IELTS 6.5 overall with 5.5 in each band. For the skilled migration points test, superior English at IELTS 8 gives 20 points. Sit your IELTS early and give yourself time to resit if needed.

Step five: consider regional study. Studying at a regional campus adds 5 points to your PR score and may give an extra 1 to 2 years on your 485 visa.

If you are about to enrol or your current course is not leading where you expected, book a consultation with our team. We can assess your situation honestly and tell you what the realistic pathways look like from where you are.
