How does the Victorian Points Test work?
Victoria ranks every ROI using the Victorian Points Test (VPT). The VPT combines seven factors: age, English, years of experience in your nominated occupation, education, occupation skill level, partner skill and annual earnings from skilled employment in Victoria. ROIs are ranked from highest to lowest. There is no fixed pass mark. Victoria invites the highest totals in each round, so your chances depend on who else is in the pool.
The VPT is separate from the SkillSelect points test. You still need at least 65 SkillSelect points to be eligible for the visa.

What is the highest Victorian Points Test score?
The highest possible VPT total is 950. That is 300 for age, 200 for English, 100 for experience, 100 for education, 50 for skill level, 50 for partner skill and 150 for Victorian earnings.
Age carries the most weight. A 30-year-old scores 14 points less than a 29-year-old. At 35 the gap is 90 points, and at 40 it is 164 points.
English is the factor most applicants can still improve. Moving from Proficient to Superior English adds 100 points. That is more than the 90-point age gap between 30 and 36.
Victorian Points Test examples
| Factor | Applicant A | Applicant B | Applicant C |
|---|---|---|---|
| Age | 27 (300) | 34 (226) | 38 (166) |
| English | Proficient (100) | Superior (200) | Competent (0) |
| Experience | 1 to 3 years (40) | More than 8 years (100) | 6 to 8 years (80) |

| Partner skill | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Victorian earnings | $96,000 (32) | None (0) | None (0) |
| VPT total | 572 | 651 | 296 |
Applicant B is seven years older than Applicant A but ranks higher because of Superior English, more experience and a Masters. With Proficient English, Applicant B would score 551 and rank below Applicant A. These are illustrations only. Victoria does not publish the scores it invites at.
How does Victoria choose who to invite?
Every ROI is considered in two ways at once.
- Most competitive: in each round, Victoria invites the highest VPT totals across all eligible occupations.
- Priority industry: in each round, Victoria also invites the highest VPT totals within each priority industry.
Victoria does not prioritise invitations for personal circumstances such as age or an expiring visa.
