What is the Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462)?
The Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462) is an Australian temporary visa designed for young people who want to spend up to 12 months in Australia working, travelling, and experiencing life in a new country.
On this visa you can:
- Live and travel anywhere in Australia for up to 12 months
- Work to support yourself financially
- Undertake short-term study (up to four months)
- Gain international work experience
It is not a migration pathway visa. It does not lead to permanent residency on its own. It is exactly what the name says - a working holiday.
For many young Indians it is the most accessible way to spend meaningful time in Australia without committing to a full degree program or a long-term visa process.
Why Indian applicants must use the ballot
Demand from India, China, and Vietnam for the 462 visa far exceeds the places available. Australia allocates approximately 1,000 places annually for Indian applicants. Because there are far more eligible applicants than places, the Department of Home Affairs introduced a ballot system - a random pre-application draw.
You cannot apply for the 462 visa directly if you are an Indian passport holder applying for the first time. You must first register in the ballot, be randomly selected, and then apply.
The ballot does not test your qualifications or give preference based on any merit criteria. It is a random draw. If you are eligible and register, your chance of selection depends entirely on how many people register in that program year.
Key dates for the 2026-27 ballot
This is the most important section if you are reading this now.
The 2026-27 ballot registration window is currently open:
- Registration opens: Thursday, 4 June 2026
- Registration closes: Thursday, 25 June 2026
- First selection round: from 2 July 2026
- Selection rounds continue: until 30 April 2027
If you miss the 25 June 2026 closing date, you cannot enter this program year's ballot. Your next opportunity would be the 2027-28 ballot, which will open approximately June 2027.
Given that today is 13 June 2026, you have approximately 12 days remaining to register.

Who is eligible for the 462 visa?
To be eligible for the Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462) as an Indian citizen, you must:
- Hold a valid Indian passport
- Be aged between 18 and 30 inclusive at the time of visa application (not just at ballot registration - if you turn 31 before being selected and lodging your application, your registration becomes invalid)
- Hold a valid PAN card
- Have completed at least a secondary school education
- Meet English language requirements
- Be applying for your first 462 visa (you must not have previously held a Subclass 462 or Subclass 417 visa)
- Apply from outside Australia
- Meet health and character requirements
One eligibility point that catches applicants out: the age limit applies at the time of lodging the full visa application, not when you enter the ballot. If you are 30 when you register but turn 31 before submitting your application, you will be unable to proceed even if selected.
How the ballot works step by step
Step 1 - Create an ImmiAccount
Go to the Department of Home Affairs website and create an ImmiAccount. Enable multi-factor authentication when prompted - this is mandatory for 2026 registrations.
Step 2 - Complete the ballot registration
Log into your ImmiAccount and find the Work and Holiday (Subclass 462) ballot registration option. This option is only visible during the three-week registration window. Enter your personal details carefully. Every detail must match your passport exactly.
Step 3 - Pay the AUD 25 registration fee
Pay the ballot registration fee of AUD 25 directly through the portal using your own debit or credit card. This fee is non-refundable regardless of whether you are selected.
Step 4 - Wait for selection results
After the registration window closes on 25 June 2026, the Department of Home Affairs runs selection rounds from 2 July 2026 onwards. If selected, you receive an email notification. If not selected in the first round, your registration remains active for subsequent rounds throughout the program year until 30 April 2027.
If you are not selected across all rounds, you will not receive any notification. You simply wait for the next program year's ballot.
Costs involved
There are two separate fees:
Ballot registration fee - AUD 25 Paid to the Department of Home Affairs during ballot registration. This is payable regardless of the outcome. You do not get it back if you are not selected.
Visa application fee - AUD 650 Payable only if you are selected in the ballot and proceed to lodge the full visa application. This fee is effective from 1 July 2025 and applies to applications lodged from that date onward.
The total cost if you are selected and granted the visa is AUD 675.
Note: There may be additional costs for health examinations and police clearance certificates depending on your circumstances.
What you can do on the 462 visa
Once granted, the 462 visa gives you:
- 12 months to live and travel anywhere in Australia
- The right to work for any employer, in any industry
- Generally up to six months with the same employer (after which you need to move to a different employer unless an exception applies)
- The ability to study for up to four months
- The option to apply for a second or third 462 visa if you complete specified regional work during your first visa
Common industries where 462 visa holders work include hospitality, tourism, retail, agriculture, customer service, and seasonal employment. Many applicants use the visa to fund their travel while gaining genuine work experience in Australia.
What happens after you are selected?
If your registration is selected, you will receive an email from the Department of Home Affairs inviting you to lodge the full visa application.
This is where the real process begins. You have 28 calendar days from the date of your invitation email to lodge the complete application. Missing this deadline means losing your selection entirely - you do not get an extension.
For the full application you will need:
- A valid passport
- Evidence of educational qualifications
- Evidence of funds to support your initial time in Australia
- Health insurance arranged or evidence of access to funds for medical expenses
- A police clearance certificate
- Proof of English language proficiency
- Any other documents the Department requests
The Department typically decides 462 visa applications within one to two months of a complete application being lodged.
Common mistakes that get registrations rejected
Based on the applications we see at Studynash, these are the most frequent errors:
Details not matching the passport. Every piece of information in your ImmiAccount registration must match your passport exactly - name spelling, date of birth, passport number. Even a minor discrepancy can cause problems.
Registering multiple times. Only one registration per applicant is permitted per program year. Multiple registrations can result in disqualification.
Age miscalculation. Some applicants register at age 30 and assume they are eligible. If they turn 31 before lodging the actual visa application after selection, they are no longer eligible. Plan your timeline carefully.
Incomplete ImmiAccount setup. Multi-factor authentication is now mandatory. Accounts without MFA enabled cannot complete the registration.
Assuming registration guarantees a visa. Being selected in the ballot only gives you the right to apply. You still need to meet all visa requirements and pass health and character checks.
