    ✦ Key Takeaways

    • The 485 visa lets you live and work anywhere in Australia after graduating, giving you time to pursue permanent residency.
    • You must apply within six months of the date on your course completion letter, not your graduation ceremony.
    • Graduates from Adelaide universities (University of Adelaide, UniSA, Flinders) may access a longer 485 if they studied in regional SA.
    • South Australia has a dedicated SA Graduates stream for state nomination that can be a fast path to the 190 visa.
    • The 485 visa fee is AUD 4,600 for most applicants as of March 2026. There are no refunds if refused.
    • After working in your field in Adelaide, the SA Graduates state nomination stream may be the most direct route to PR.

If you have just finished your degree at the University of Adelaide, UniSA, or Flinders University, the 485 visa is almost certainly your next step. It is the bridge between graduation and the permanent residency pathways that South Australia offers to graduates who stay and work in the state.

This guide covers everything specific to Adelaide graduates: the rules that apply to you, the South Australian advantages you may not know about, and the most direct route from your 485 to permanent residency in Adelaide.

What the 485 Visa Gives You

The 485 visa lets you live and work anywhere in Australia after completing your studies. You can work full time for any employer in any field. You are not restricted to your area of study. You can travel in and out of Australia freely. And you can include eligible family members in your application.

How long you get depends on your qualification:

A bachelor degree or honours degree gives you two years. A master by coursework gives you two years. A master by research gives you three years. A PhD gives you four years. A diploma or trade qualification gives you 18 months.

If you studied in a designated regional area, you may be eligible for an additional one to two years through the Second Post-Higher Education Work stream. Adelaide itself counts as regional for some purposes. Speak with a migration agent to confirm whether your specific study location and qualification type qualifies.

    The Six-Month Application Window

You have exactly six months from your course completion date to lodge your 485 application. Not from graduation. Not from when your results were released. From the date on your course completion letter issued by your institution.

With the fee now at AUD 5,750 and non-refundable, missing this window or submitting an application that is refused costs you the full amount with no recovery. Start preparing your application at the three-month mark and aim to lodge by the five-month point at the latest.

For Adelaide graduates, completion letters are issued by the University of Adelaide, UniSA, and Flinders through your student portal after your final results are confirmed. The date on that letter is the date that starts your six-month clock.

    Key Requirements for Adelaide Graduates

Your English test must show IELTS 6.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each of the four bands from a single sitting. The test result must be no more than 12 months old at the time of lodgement. If your IELTS result is approaching expiry, book a new test before you lodge.

You must be under 35 years of age when the Department receives your application. Not when you submit. When they receive it. If you turn 35 the day before your application is received, it is refused. The exceptions are Masters by Research graduates, PhD graduates, and Hong Kong SAR and British National Overseas passport holders, who can apply up to age 50.

You need Overseas Visitor Health Cover (OVHC) in place. Not OSHC. If you are still on your student visa at the time of lodgement, OSHC is acceptable for the day of lodging. But before the visa is granted, you need OVHC covering from the date your student visa expires. Arrange this in advance.

For the vocational education and training stream, you also need a skills assessment from the relevant authority.

    Documents Adelaide Graduates Typically Need

Your course completion letter with the exact completion date. Official academic transcripts from your institution. A valid English test result meeting the 6.5 threshold. An OVHC policy certificate. An Australian Federal Police check. Health examination results from a Department-approved panel physician. Passport and identity documents. Evidence of meeting the relevant study requirement for your stream.

Do not leave the police check or health examination for the last minute. Both can take several weeks to complete and any delay can push you past your six-month window.

After Your 485 — The South Australian Advantage

Adelaide graduates are in a strong position compared to graduates in Sydney or Melbourne when it comes to the next step after the 485. South Australia runs one of Australia's most active state nomination programs, and it has a dedicated stream specifically for graduates who have studied and are working in South Australia.

The South Australian Graduates stream of the 190 visa nomination requires you to have completed a minimum bachelor qualification at a South Australian institution and be currently employed full time in South Australia in work closely related to your nominated occupation. If you are on a 485 visa, working in Adelaide in your field, this is potentially the most direct path to permanent residency available to you.

State nomination for the 190 adds 5 points to your federal SkillSelect score and grants permanent residency immediately on visa grant. Unlike Sydney and Melbourne, where competition for state nomination is significantly harder, South Australia actively invites skilled graduates who are contributing to the state economy.

For graduates who do not yet have enough points for the 190, the 491 visa offers an alternative. Studying and working in South Australia may qualify you for the regional visa pathway, which adds 15 points and provides a five-year provisional visa with a clear route to permanent residency after three years.

What Happens at the University of Adelaide, UniSA, and Flinders

All three Adelaide universities produce graduates across the key occupation groups that South Australia is currently inviting for state nomination. Engineering graduates from these institutions are regularly nominated. Nursing and health graduates are in consistent demand. ICT graduates are sought, though they are more likely to be directed toward the regional 491 pathway than the 190.

If you completed a bachelor degree or higher at any of these institutions and have found work in South Australia in your field within your 485 visa period, the SA Graduates stream should be the first state nomination option you assess.
