South Australia is one of the most accessible state nomination programs in Australia right now. With the 189 visa quota effectively exhausted for the 2025-26 year and the Northern Territory closed to new applicants, South Australia has become the go-to option for skilled migrants who want a realistic shot at permanent residency in 2026.
If you are in Adelaide, studying or working in South Australia, or an offshore applicant with your occupation on the SA list, here is everything you need to know about how the 190 visa state nomination program works.
How Many Places Are Available in South Australia
For the 2025-26 program year, South Australia has been allocated 2,250 nomination places in total. This is split into 1,350 places for the permanent subclass 190 visa and 900 places for the provisional subclass 491 visa.
Invitation rounds are held monthly. In March 2026, South Australia issued 406 invitations in a single round. 242 of those were for the subclass 190 and 164 for the subclass 491. It was the largest round of the financial year to that point.
As of March 2026, around 70 per cent of the total annual allocation had been used. That leaves approximately 675 places remaining for both subclasses before the end of June 2026. If you are eligible and your documents are ready, time matters.
Which Occupations South Australia Is Inviting
South Australia does not publish a fixed invitation score the way ACT does. Instead, it selects candidates from SkillSelect EOIs based on occupation demand and workforce needs. The following occupation groups have received consistent invitation numbers across the 2025-26 year:
Health and medical professionals receive the largest share of invitations, particularly for the subclass 190. This includes registered nurses, general practitioners, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and aged care workers. South Australia's growing healthcare sector and the BioMed City precinct in Adelaide have sustained this demand.
Engineering and construction professionals have also received strong numbers throughout the year. Civil engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and construction managers are among the most invited. Infrastructure spending in South Australia, including the Osborne Naval Shipyard defence contracts, is driving this consistently.
ICT professionals receive significant invitations but mostly through the subclass 491 rather than the 190. Software engineers, developers, ICT business analysts, and database administrators are being directed to the regional pathway, which suggests South Australia is placing tech talent in regional areas rather than the Adelaide CBD.
Education professionals including secondary school teachers and early childhood educators are being invited, particularly for roles in outer regional South Australia.
Defence and manufacturing trades are a specific South Australia priority given the scale of defence contracts based in the state.
If your occupation is not in these categories, that does not automatically mean you will not be invited. South Australia maintains a Skilled Occupation List and adjusts it dynamically based on employer demand. Check the official list at migration.sa.gov.au before assuming your occupation is or is not eligible.

The Four Nomination Streams
South Australia has four separate pathways for skilled migration nomination. Understanding which one applies to you is the first step.
Skilled Employment in South Australia is for onshore applicants currently living and working in South Australia. You must be employed in your nominated occupation full time and have a minimum of two years of skilled work experience in the last five years (one year for construction trades). You submit a Registration of Interest through the SA government portal.
South Australian Graduates is for international students who have completed at least a bachelor degree at a South Australian institution and are currently working in South Australia in their skilled occupation. This is a strong pathway for graduates in Adelaide who are on a 485 visa and have found employment in their field.
Outer Regional Skilled Employment is for eligible temporary visa holders working full time in outer regional South Australia. Regional SA includes areas outside the Adelaide metropolitan area. This stream addresses specific skill shortages in regional communities.
Offshore is for skilled migrants who are living outside Australia. You do not submit an ROI for this stream. South Australia considers your SkillSelect EOI directly. You must have South Australia listed as your first preferred state and have an occupation on South Australia's offshore occupation list. The offshore list is more restrictive than the onshore list and focuses on trade and health occupations.
Who Can Apply: Base Eligibility Requirements
Regardless of which stream you apply through, every applicant must meet these baseline requirements:
You must be under 45 years of age at the time of nomination approval. You must have a positive skills assessment for your nominated occupation from the relevant assessing authority. You must meet the minimum English language requirement of IELTS 6.0 overall, or an equivalent score in another accepted test. You must have the minimum work experience required for your stream. You must have a minimum score of 65 points on the federal skilled migration points test.
For the Skilled Employment stream specifically, you must also be currently employed in a role closely related to your nominated occupation and residing in South Australia.
Note that 65 points is the minimum to be considered, not a competitive score. For the 190 pathway, applicants with 70 to 80 points are typically more competitive in South Australia than in other states. The additional 5 points you receive from state nomination often gets you to a competitive federal points score for the visa application itself.
The Application Process Step by Step
For onshore applicants, the process works like this. First, submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect, selecting South Australia as your preferred state. Second, submit your Registration of Interest through the South Australia government migration portal. Third, if your EOI and ROI meet the requirements, you will receive an invitation to apply for SA nomination. You have 14 days to respond to this invitation. Fourth, if your nomination application is approved, South Australia nominates you in SkillSelect. This triggers an invitation from the Department of Home Affairs to lodge your 190 or 491 visa application.
For offshore applicants, skip the ROI. Submit your SkillSelect EOI with South Australia as your first preferred state and wait for South Australia to invite you directly from the EOI pool.
The nomination fee is AUD 381 for both subclass 190 and 491. There is no fee for submitting a Registration of Interest.
Why Adelaide Is a Strong Base for State Nomination
Adelaide sits in a favourable position within the national migration program. South Australia consistently ranks as one of the more accessible states for invitation, particularly compared to New South Wales and Victoria where competition is significantly higher.
Studying at the University of Adelaide, UniSA, or Flinders University and working in your field after graduation puts you in the South Australian Graduates stream, which is specifically designed to retain international talent in the state. Adelaide's cost of living relative to Sydney and Melbourne also makes it a genuinely practical place to build a career while waiting for PR.
For 485 graduates in Adelaide who are working in health, engineering, or education, the SA Graduates stream is often the fastest realistic pathway to permanent residency available.
